An Analysis of Instructional Methods as Motivational Variables

As discussed by Dr Vince Carbone at the Thurrock workshop, March 2006.

To be submitted to: The Behavior Analyst , Spring, 2006

The principle of motivation has resurfaced as an independent variable in the field of behavior analysis over the past 20 years. The increased interest is the result of the refinements of the concept of the motivating operations and its application to the learning needs of persons with developmental disabilities.

Notwithstanding the increased emphasis upon modification of antecedent variables to reduce problem behavior the autism treatment literature currently reflects limited recognition of this important behavioral variable.

Motivating Operations

Paper by Jack Michael explaining his suggestion to replace the term Establishing Operation (EO) with Motivating Operation (MO).

ABA tutorial - Jack Michael

Establishing (motivating) operations

Explanation of the concept of EO (MO) by Jack Michael, the originator.

Abative effect

Paper by Jack Michael and others explaining the new term "abative effect". This is an antecedent event that reduces operant responding and includes abolishing operations (e.g. satiation with food reducing eating), S-deltas (stimuli signalling no or reduced reinforcement) and S-p conditions (stimuli signalling punishment).
